‘Assassin’s Creed’ Live-Action Series Still in Development at Netflix

‘Assassin’s Creed’ Live-Action Series Still in Development at Netflix

Fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise have been eagerly awaiting updates on Netflix’s upcoming live-action series adaptation. Initially announced in October 2020, the series was intended to be a major part of a long-term collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft, promising to bring the rich world of Assassins and Templars to life in a way never seen before.

However, despite the excitement, progress on the show has been slow and met with multiple setbacks. Here’s everything we know about the current status of the Assassin’s Creed live-action series and what we can expect moving forward.

A Brief History of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series

When Netflix first announced the series, it was revealed to be a live-action, epic, genre-blending adaptation of Ubisoft’s best-selling video game franchise. The collaboration aimed to create multiple Assassin’s Creed projects, including an animated series and an anime adaptation, alongside the highly anticipated live-action show.

By 2021, Netflix had appointed Jeb Stuart, best known for writing Die Hard and serving as the showrunner for Vikings: Valhalla, as the lead writer. This decision initially gave fans hope that the series would embrace the historical action and drama elements that made the games so popular.

However, in early 2023, Stuart confirmed that he had left the project, citing creative differences with Netflix and Ubisoft. This departure led to a significant delay in development, as the production team had to find a new showrunner and creative direction for the series.

Current Status: Is It Still Happening?

Despite these setbacks, Netflix and Ubisoft have confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed live-action series is still in active development. While the details remain scarce, Ubisoft executives have reassured fans that the project has not been canceled and that work is still underway behind the scenes.

Reports suggest that Netflix is still looking for a new showrunner and head writer, but no official announcements have been made regarding who will replace Stuart. Additionally, casting details remain undisclosed, leaving fans speculating on who might take on the role of the next assassin in this adaptation.

What Could the Show Be About?

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the Netflix adaptation is which time period and characters it will focus on. The Assassin’s Creed franchise spans numerous historical settings, from Renaissance Italy (Assassin’s Creed II) to Ancient Egypt (Assassin’s Creed Origins) and even the Viking Age (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla).

There are several possibilities for the storyline:

  • An Original Story – The series might introduce an entirely new assassin, similar to how Assassin’s Creed Mirage featured a fresh perspective within the established universe.
  • A Well-Known Assassin’s Tale – Netflix could adapt Ezio Auditore’s iconic story (Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, Revelations), given his popularity among fans.
  • A Modern-Day Focus – The show might explore Abstergo Industries and the modern-day conflict between Assassins and Templars, using historical flashbacks.

Given that previous adaptations of Assassin’s Creed (such as the 2016 Michael Fassbender film) were criticized for focusing too much on the modern-day storyline, many fans hope that Netflix will strike the right balance between the historical and present-day narratives.

Challenges and Expectations

Bringing Assassin’s Creed to live action is no easy task. The series has a massive, interconnected lore, and staying faithful to the games while creating an engaging story for new audiences is a major challenge.

Some of the concerns include:

  • Finding the Right Tone – The series needs to balance historical drama, action, and sci-fi elements without losing what makes Assassin’s Creed unique.
  • Avoiding the Mistakes of the 2016 Film – Fans were disappointed with the previous Assassin’s Creed movie, which strayed too far from the game’s core appeal.
  • High-Quality Action Sequences – The series must faithfully recreate the parkour, stealth, and combat that define Assassin’s Creed’s gameplay.

On the other hand, there’s also a lot of potential for Netflix to create a groundbreaking video game adaptation if handled correctly. Recent hits like The Last of Us and Arcane have proven that faithful, well-crafted game adaptations can succeed.

When Can We Expect a Release Date?

As of April 2025, there is still no official release date for the Assassin’s Creed live-action series. Given that Netflix is still in the early stages of development, we likely won’t see the show premiere until 2026 or later.

Ubisoft and Netflix will likely reveal more information once a new showrunner is confirmed and production officially begins.
