Enola Holmes 3: The Mystery Behind the Movie on Netflix
Enola Holmes 3 on Netflix: The Story Behind the Movie
The character of Enola Holmes was created by author Nancy Springer in her book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, which reimagines the Holmes universe through the eyes of Sherlock’s much younger, rebellious sister. The books were a hit, especially among young adult readers, for their feminist themes, clever plots, and empowering portrayal of a girl genius solving mysteries in Victorian England.
Netflix saw potential in bringing this fresh twist on the Holmes legacy to screen. Legendary Entertainment acquired the film rights, and Enola Holmes premiered on Netflix in 2020—originally planned for theatrical release but shifted due to the pandemic.
The first film, directed by Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve), blended humor, heart, and action. Millie Bobby Brown, already globally famous for Stranger Things, not only starred as Enola but also served as a producer—making her one of the youngest producers in Hollywood.
The film was a massive success, praised for Brown’s charismatic performance, the playful breaking of the fourth wall, and the sharp screenplay by Jack Thorne. Audiences especially loved the chemistry between Millie and Henry Cavill’s more emotionally open version of Sherlock Holmes.
New Adventure, New Setting
In the third film, Enola sets off on what begins as a relaxing getaway to Malta—only to find herself caught in yet another tangled web of intrigue. The story explores her deepening connection with Tewkesbury and presents her with some of her most complex challenges yet, testing both her intellect and her heart.
