Exterritorial Review: A Gripping Action Thriller on Netflix

Exterritorial was born out of a desire to blend high-stakes action with psychological tension in a political setting rarely explored on screen: the interior of a U.S. consulate. Director Christian Zübert, known for films like Three Quarter Moon and Lommbock, aimed to create a story where diplomatic immunity becomes a literal prison.

The concept was inspired by real-world scenarios where embassies and consulates operate as sovereign spaces, sometimes beyond local law enforcement’s reach. The writers envisioned a parent’s worst nightmare—having their child disappear inside such a legally complex and politically untouchable place—and used that premise to drive the film’s tension.

The film’s lead, Jeanne Goursaud, trained extensively in mixed martial arts and tactical combat for months prior to filming. Her performance as Sara, a traumatized ex-soldier forced into action, was designed to show both emotional depth and brutal physicality. Goursaud did many of her own stunts, adding authenticity to the film’s intense fight scenes.

Filming took place in Frankfurt and Berlin, with a meticulously constructed replica of the U.S. consulate built on a soundstage to allow for elaborate, close-quarters action choreography. The production team worked with military consultants and psychologists to ensure the portrayal of PTSD and military operations felt grounded and respectful.

Zübert’s team intentionally avoided overuse of visual effects, relying on practical stunts and real-time choreography to give the action a gritty, tactile feel. They cited influences like The Raid, John Wick, and Prisoners as tonal benchmarks—films that combine sleek combat with psychological unease.

Composer Annette Focks crafted a minimal, tense score that mimicked a heartbeat, reinforcing the film’s claustrophobic atmosphere.

4.Urs Rechn as Agent Miller

• An unyielding consulate security officer, Agent Miller becomes one of the major obstacles standing in Sara’s way as she attempts to break through the consulate’s walls of secrecy.

5.Anna Schudt as Dr. Lena Krause

• Dr. Krause is a German official caught in a delicate balance, trying to resolve the diplomatic mess while facing political constraints that prevent her from fully assisting Sara.

6.Leonard Kunz as Max

• Max, Sara’s young son, is the catalyst for the entire plot, his sudden disappearance driving the story and Sara’s relentless search for answers.
