Julia Garner Confirms Madonna Biopic Still in Development

Madonna biopic still in development, says Julia Garner

The long-awaited Madonna biopic isn’t dead—just delayed. Actress Julia Garner, who was previously tapped to play the Queen of Pop, recently confirmed that the film is still in development, sparking renewed excitement among fans.

Rumors had been swirling for months that the high-profile project had been shelved indefinitely. But Garner put those fears to rest in a new interview, stating that the film is very much alive, although there’s no confirmed timeline for production. “It’s still in development,” she said. “It’s not dead, just paused.”

The biopic, which Madonna herself was set to direct, has faced multiple delays due to scheduling conflicts, script revisions, and the global pop icon’s own Celebration Tour commitments. Originally announced in 2020, the film was expected to trace Madonna’s early rise from a struggling New York City dancer to an international music sensation and cultural icon.

Julia Garner, best known for her Emmy-winning role in Ozark, beat out several high-profile contenders—including Florence Pugh and Sydney Sweeney—for the lead role. Her physical resemblance to the pop icon and her strong acting chops made her a favorite among both fans and critics.

Garner admitted she’s still “honored and excited” to portray Madonna whenever the project resumes. “Playing someone so fearless, so revolutionary, would be a dream. I just hope the timing works out.”

While Universal Pictures has remained tight-lipped on official updates, the latest news offers a glimmer of hope that the biopic could still become a reality. Madonna fans will just have to wait a little longer to see the Material Girl’s story come to life on screen.

For now, one thing’s clear: the Madonna biopic is not off the table—and Julia Garner is still on board.
