Netflix releases new series “The Four Seasons” starring Tina Fey
Tina Fey, celebrated for her distinct comedic voice and acclaimed series like 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, found inspiration in Alan Alda’s 1981 film The Four Seasons. The story’s exploration of the emotional complexities in long-standing friendships deeply resonated with her. Eager to reinterpret it for modern audiences, she joined forces with trusted collaborators Lang Fisher (Never Have I Ever) and Tracey Wigfield (Great News) to develop a new take as a limited series.
Instead of a direct remake, the creative team chose to update the film’s themes—aging, relationships, and evolving social norms—to better reflect today’s world, where topics like divorce, generational divides, and non-traditional families are more openly explored. The series also places greater emphasis on the women’s perspectives, giving them richer storylines and emotional nuance.
Filming took place in upstate New York and the Hamptons in late 2024, with the changing seasons intentionally used as a visual and symbolic element to reflect the characters’ internal transformations.
Alan Alda, who wrote, directed, and starred in the original film, was brought in early during production. He not only offered his insights but also agreed to appear in the series as Don, Anne’s opinionated father, adding a generational link and honoring the original work.
The cast features a strong blend of comedic and dramatic talent, including Steve Carell and Will Forte alongside Fey. Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani add further depth and representation to the ensemble.
The creators approached the series with a theatrical sensibility. Each episode is tightly focused and dialogue-heavy, resembling a stage play that delves into how close-knit friendships shift when life forces people to change.
