In early 2021, Netflix secured an exclusive deal with director Gareth Evans, known for The Raid series. Havoc became the first project under this collaboration, with Tom Hardy attached from the beginning—a casting decision both Evans and Netflix were keen on.

Evans designed Havoc as a tribute to the “heroic bloodshed” films popular in 1980s and 1990s Hong Kong cinema, combining intense action sequences with a dark, noir-inspired storyline. The story takes place over two nights just before Christmas and follows Detective Walker (Hardy) as he ventures into a dangerous underworld to save a politician’s estranged son.

Filming wrapped up in 2021, but the movie’s release was postponed due to industry-wide issues such as labor strikes and scheduling difficulties. These challenges prolonged post-production, leading to the film’s debut almost four years after shooting finished.

What the Critics Are Saying:

The Financial Times praised the film’s unrelenting pace and visually striking action, giving it a solid four-star rating.

The Guardian took a more critical stance, noting that while the action delivers, the story lacks emotional weight and coherence.

The Times was less impressed, calling the plot predictable and awarding it just two stars.
