Netflix Sets May 23 Release for Fear Street: Prom Queen
Behind the Blood: Making Fear Street: Prom Queen
Release Date: May 23, 2025
Based on: R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel
Director: Matt Palmer
Streaming on: Netflix
Fear Street: Prom Queen started out as part of R.L. Stine’s iconic teen horror series in the early ’90s. It was one of the more beloved entries because it tapped into the high-stakes drama of high school life—and added a killer twist. Netflix greenlit the adaptation after the wild success of the 2021 Fear Street trilogy, which proved that audiences were hungry for nostalgic, slasher-style horror with a modern twist.
Matt Palmer (Calibre) was brought on as director, bringing a moody, suspenseful tone to the project. Unlike the 2021 trilogy, which jumped between eras, Prom Queen keeps the story focused in the late 1980s—drenched in synths, satin prom dresses, and vintage mall culture. The film mixes Carrie’s glam horror with Scream’s whodunit energy.
Palmer wanted the film to feel like a horror yearbook snapshot, showing both the cruelty and vulnerability of teenage life, all with a knife-edge tension running through it.
What’s it about?
Set in 1988, the movie follows Lori Granger (played by India Fowler), a student at Shadyside High whose school year takes a terrifying turn when prom queen candidates begin mysteriously disappearing—one by one. As the night of the big dance draws near, it’s clear that someone will stop at nothing to eliminate the competition… and Lori could be next. What was supposed to be a dream night is quickly turning into a nightmare.
High school glamour meets classic slasher horror in this retro teen scream.
Directed by Matt Palmer, this adaptation promises a blend of suspense, style, and slasher thrills with an ‘80s vibe. It’s a perfect mix of Heathers and Scream with that signature R.L. Stine twist.
The Cast:
Netflix cast rising stars and familiar faces:
- India Fowler (known from The Nevers) as Lori Granger, the smart but anxious lead.
- Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), and Ariana Greenblatt (Borderlands) bring charisma and edge to the rival prom queen candidates.
- Chris Klein, Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston add gravitas to the adult roles, grounding the teen chaos with layers of small-town secrets.
Streaming on Netflix, May 23, 2025 – Mark your calendars, horror fans!
Why you should be excited:
This is the first Fear Street film since the wildly successful trilogy (1994, 1978, 1666) and it’s reigniting the anthology-style storytelling.
It explores a standalone mystery, so you don’t need to have seen the others to dive in.
It leans into high school horror—an underrated subgenre that combines juicy drama with deadly stakes.
Final Word: If you’re into murder mysteries, teen rivalries, retro aesthetics, and a whole lot of blood… this is one Netflix drop you do NOT want to miss.
