Netflix’s Havoc Review: Tom Hardy Leads a Brutal Dive Into Crime and Corruption

  • “Havoc” (2025) – Movie Review
  • Director: Gareth Evans
  • Starring: Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant
  • Genre: Action / Crime / Thriller
  • Platform: Netflix

Review:

Directed by Gareth Evans, best known for The Raid, Havoc is a dark, unflinching dive into urban chaos, filled with gritty action and heavy atmosphere. While the film excels in raw physicality and visual intensity, its narrative leaves something to be desired.

Tom Hardy takes on the role of a worn-out detective who must navigate a violent criminal underworld after a botched drug deal. His mission to locate a missing politician’s son pulls him into a nightmarish spiral of corruption, violence, and survival.

Highlights:

Tom Hardy’s Performance: Hardy dominates the screen with a brooding, physical presence. His performance relies more on intensity than dialogue, anchoring the film with a rugged authenticity.

Action Sequences: Gareth Evans stays true to form, delivering hard-hitting, close-quarters combat that feels raw and unpolished. The fight scenes—particularly in tight spaces—are intense and creatively executed.

Visual Tone: The film’s look is soaked in noir sensibilities—rainy streets, dimly lit interiors, and a sense of constant threat. It creates a grim, almost graphic novel-like aesthetic that enhances the atmosphere.

Shortcomings:

Simplistic Storyline: The plot feels familiar and lacks the emotional or thematic depth to elevate it beyond a standard action thriller.

Uneven Pacing: Despite the bursts of action, the film slows down during expository scenes, affecting the overall rhythm.

Wasted Talent: With actors like Forest Whitaker and Timothy Olyphant in the cast, it’s disappointing that their characters are underdeveloped and underused.
