Nonnas Movie Review – A Feel-Good Movie About Grandmas and Cooking

Nonnas movie review

“Nonnas” (2025) is inspired by the real-life story of Joe Scaravella a native of Staten Island who, after enduring the profound loss of his mother, grandmother and sister set out to capture the warmth and tradition of his childhood kitchen. In 2007, he founded Enoteca Maria a one-of-a-kind restaurant where grandmothers—originally from Italian backgrounds—prepare cherished family recipes. By 2015, the concept grew to welcome grandmothers from diverse cultures, transforming the space into a global celebration of heritage and homemade cooking.

The film adaptation follows Joe’s heartfelt mission with Vince Vaughn stepping into the role. Supporting characters such as Gia, Roberta, Teresa and Antonella—portrayed by Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire and Brenda Vaccaro—are fictional creations inspired by the real women who bring authenticity and flavor to the Enoteca Maria kitchen.

Still serving guests in Staten Island today, Enoteca Maria offers more than just food—it’s an experience rooted in cultural storytelling and cross-generational connection. The restaurant remains a testament to the idea that sharing a meal is one of the most powerful ways to honor memory, preserve tradition and foster unity. Due to its growing popularity, securing a reservation in advance is highly recommended.
