Netflix Secures U.S. Rights to Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague After Cannes Acclaim
Netflix has officially acquired U.S. distribution rights to Nouvelle Vague, the newest project from acclaimed director Richard Linklater. The deal, reportedly valued at $4 million, follows the film’s highly praised premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and represents one of the largest U.S. acquisitions ever for a French-language feature.
Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague is a black-and-white, French-language film that pays tribute to the legendary French New Wave. It centers on the behind-the-scenes creation of Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic 1960 film Breathless, offering a stylized, dramatized look at its making. The movie is shot in a vintage 4:3 aspect ratio and features Guillaume Marbeck portraying Godard, with Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. With a strong focus on period detail and creative interpretation, the film is both a cinematic homage and a narrative exploration of a transformative era in film history.
Premiering on May 17, 2025, at Cannes, Nouvelle Vague competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or and received a warm reception, including a standing ovation from festival audiences. In France, it is scheduled for theatrical release on October 8, 2025, through ARP Sélection.
As part of its U.S. release strategy, Netflix plans to give the film a limited two-week theatrical run to ensure eligibility for major awards before making it available on its streaming platform. This move is in line with Netflix’s continued investment in auteur-driven, international films and its broader ambition to support bold storytelling across global cinema.
