The Story Behind Netflix’s Devil May Cry Animated Series

Netflix has not yet announced whether “Devil May Cry” will be renewed for a second season. The first season premiered on April 3, 2025, and its future largely depends on viewership numbers and audience engagement in the coming weeks.

Adi Shankar, the show’s creator, has expressed interest in a multi-season arc, suggesting there’s more story to tell. However, Netflix generally reviews a show’s performance within its first month before making renewal decisions.

Season 1’s finale introduces major plot points, particularly involving Vergil, that could lay the groundwork for future episodes. Fans eager for a second season can help by streaming the series and sharing their support online.

The Devil May Cry animated series on Netflix is an adaptation of Capcom’s popular action game franchise, known for its fast-paced combat, supernatural themes, and stylish storytelling. The series is produced by Adi Shankar, who also worked on Netflix’s Castlevania, ensuring a dark and faithful adaptation for fans.

Story Behind the Series

The Devil May Cry franchise follows Dante, a demon hunter with a cocky attitude and a tragic past. He runs Devil May Cry, a business specializing in eliminating demonic threats. He is the son of Sparda, a legendary demon who betrayed his kind to protect humanity, and Eva, his human mother. This heritage makes Dante a powerful warrior, often seen wielding his iconic sword Rebellion and dual pistols, Ebony & Ivory.

While official plot details of the Netflix series remain under wraps, it is expected to explore Dante’s battles against demonic forces, his relationship with his estranged twin brother Vergil, and possibly the larger war between demons and humanity. The introduction of White Rabbit—an original character—suggests new elements might be added to the existing lore.

The casting of Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante is particularly exciting for fans, as he previously voiced Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and 5. Other key characters such as Lady, Enzo, and VP Baines suggest that the series will draw from various parts of the DMC universe, possibly blending elements from the games while introducing fresh narratives.

The Netflix animated adaptation of Devil May Cry boasts a stellar voice cast, bringing the beloved characters to life:

  • Dante is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, recognized for his performances as Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, as well as Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach.
  • Mary (Lady) is portrayed by Scout Taylor-Compton.
  • White Rabbit is voiced by Hoon Lee.
  • Enzo Ferino is brought to life by Chris Coppola.
  • VP Baines was originally played by Kevin Conroy, famous for his role as Batman in numerous DC animations and games. After his passing in November 2022, Ian James Corlett took over the role.
  • Vergil is voiced by Robbie Daymond.
