The Wild Return of Kulu: A Pangolin’s Story on Netflix

Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey is a deeply moving wildlife documentary directed by Pippa Ehrlich, who also helmed the Academy Award-winning My Octopus Teacher. Premiering at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival in March 2025, the film will be available to stream on Netflix starting April 21, 2025.

The documentary follows the incredible journey of Kulu, a baby pangolin rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in South Africa. Wildlife volunteer and photographer Gareth Thomas is entrusted with the delicate task of rehabilitating Kulu and preparing him for a return to the wild. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including the pangolin’s naturally secretive behavior and the dangers posed by electric fences. The film beautifully captures the bond that forms between Thomas and Kulu, offering a powerful exploration of the balance between human intervention and respecting the animal’s autonomy.

Critics have lauded Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey for its emotionally resonant narrative and its stunning visuals. Amber Wilkinson from Screen Daily praised the film, noting that it’s “even more crowd-pleasing than My Octopus Teacher,” highlighting the documentary’s focus on the profound emotional connection between humans and animals and the urgent need for wildlife conservation. Collider also offered high praise, calling the film “moving and informative,” with a particular emphasis on the struggles faced by pangolins and the need for global action to protect endangered species.

Pangolins, which are among the most trafficked animals on Earth due to the demand for their meat and scales in traditional medicine, face an ongoing battle for survival. The documentary’s purpose is not only to raise awareness about the pangolin’s critically endangered status but also to inspire collective efforts to ensure their protection from extinction.

In an age where wildlife conservation is increasingly critical, Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey serves as a powerful, emotional, and visually captivating reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world. It’s a must-watch for anyone passionate about nature and the environment, offering both insight into the life of a little-known species and a call to action to protect our planet’s fragile ecosystems.

Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey is set to premiere on Netflix on April 21, 2025, in time for World Earth Day.
